There is no limit what the black market will produce. All this is done in the name of profit. The latest worry in the food market is the production of plastic rice. Fake rice is being produced in a large massive scale and it’s already finding its way into supermarkets shelves.
First found in China, the rice has since spread to different parts of this wonderful planet.
In each bag of rice, a small amount of real rice is mixed with plastic rice. It’s then sprayed with a fragrance to mimic the smell of rice then packaged for export to different parts of the world including African countries, which appear to be the largest consumers of Chinese rice.
But worry less. Here are the 6 tests that will easily help you find out if the rice you’re eating is plastic or not:
1. The Mortar And Pestle Test- Crush some grains of rice and pay close attention to them. If the rice turns into a fine white powder it is organic and safe to eat if it leaves a yellow tinted stain it is plastic.
2.The Fungus Test. After boiling rice, put some of it in a bottle and leave it for 2-3 days. If a mold doesn’t appear, your rice is fake and should not be consumed. This is because plastic is not affected by weather or season.
3.The Water Test- Pour a spoonful of rice in a glass of water if it is organic it will fall to the bottom, plastic will not.
4. The Boil Test- When boiling rice if it is plastic it will form a thick layer at the top of the pan.
5. Hot oil test- Drop some few grains of rice into very hot oil. If its plastic rice, it will melt and stick together at the bottom of the port or sufuria as many refer to.
6. The Fire Test- Light a few rice kernels on fire if they burn the rice you bought is plastic, don’t consume.
